What is Rhuba Camp?
Rhuba Camp is a songwriting camp that is arranged in Harplinge, a small town south of Gothenburg, Sweden. The camp is a week of sessions and workshops, where the participants write and produce music together with hand-picked producers and mentors.
The idea is to form new contacts in the industry and giving new talent the opportunity to create music together with experienced musicians and producers.
How does it all come together? I understand you have a whopping nine different studios on site?
We at Sweetspot Studios offer our large site to this event, and through a mix of permanent and temporary studios, we offer nine different stations that all consist of the tools needed to create and produce music!
The different stations vary in style and available gear. All the way from treated, high-end studios with a full Sigberg Audio MANTA system, to small, temporary setups. This gives the participants the opportunity to experience very different systems and situations.
One system has a full stage where we can do live performances with stage lightning and everything. Some areas are more laidback, and others are fully equipped studios with grand piano, drums and other instruments. Since the camp is a full week, all participants get an opportunity to try different environments find out what suit them best.
What is your role during the camp?
My main role is to ensure all system works as they should and are calibrated to the room. I am also available as technical support during the entire week. I simply make sure everyone have everything they need to produce music in a modern way without issues and hassle.
I also help with actual recording, like for instance helping to properly mike up instruments. Getting these details right is valuable to learn for the participants.
It seems like a lot of work to arrange a camp like this. It's obviously awesome for the songwriters and producers, but what's in it for you?
We wanted to create a camp where we could gather lots of competent, great people in one place. In part to network and create long lasting relations among the participants, but of course also for us. We want to be the hub where amazing music is created, and where people can find like minded people and create together.
This is a joint effort to create a community where industry professionals and artists can support each other. We already see the camp creating real effects. Not just by the music that is being created, but through the various long term collaborations that emerge afterwards. We are of course also happy to see people booking our facilities for separate sessions after the camp. Truth be told we hardly have time to finish the camp before people want to book us again!
Thank you for telling us about Rhuba Camp! Can you share some of the feedback you got from the other participants?
Of course! We actually documented the entire week, and we recorded interviews of around ten participants, including the producers. They all shared a notion of experiencing Rhuba Camp as something truly unique. They weren't prepared for how it was even possible to create such a creative and inclusive arena where everyone felt seen and safe enough to share and participate.
Another common theme was how there was no sense of competition. There are no demands or expectations, just creativity!
